Dental Exams Q & A

What should I expect in a dental exam?

Your exam will begin with a dental health history so you can discuss any issues or concerns that may have developed since your last exam. You should be sure to tell your dentist about any chronic health issues, such as diabetes or heart disease, and also tell him about any medications you may be taking, including over-the-counter medications, vitamins, and supplements since these can have an effect on your oral health. Next, your teeth and gums will be examined and the hygienist will perform a cleaning. X-rays may also be taken. Finally, Dr. Huang will perform a complete examination of your teeth and gums and discuss any issues he finds, as well as the recommended course of treatment. He or the hygienist will also discuss any problems you may be having with brushing or flossing.

How often should I see Dr. Huang?

The American Dental Association recommends seeing your dentist twice a year for checkups and to have your teeth professionally cleaned. In most cases, x-rays are only taken annually to check for signs of disease below the gum line.

Why are dental exams important for good oral health?

A dental exam gives the dentist a chance to look for existing signs of disease so they can be treated right away before they become worse. In addition to looking for signs of decay, Dr. Huang will also be looking for telltale signs that can indicate the early stages of gum disease so treatment can begin as soon as possible and tooth loss and more extensive procedures can be avoided. Plus, he looks for signs of oral cancer that are very easy to overlook without an oral exam by a skilled professional. The exam also provides an opportunity for a thorough cleaning of your teeth as well as an opportunity to ask questions or discuss your concerns.
